In 1934, the international motorsport governing body set a maximum weight of 750 kg for Grand Prix cars, excluding tyres and fuel. To meet this limit, the Germans stripped the lead-based paint from their traditional white livery, revealing the gleaming aluminium underneath. A win by one of these cars earned it the iconic nickname “Silver Arrow.” Its successors, built on the same chassis, went on to achieve continued success at the Indy 500 after the war.
